Education
See the Carriage Hills Hot Spot page for more information on local schools.
Okaloosa County has 36 academic public schools located conveniently in residential communities throughout the area. Two additional centers, for exceptional education, are located within elementary schools. All county schools are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Public instruction is offered from kindergarten through 12th grade.
State and national testing proves that our students are among the best and brightest in Florida. About half of our graduating seniors go on to higher education. According to reports from Florida universities, Okaloosa students enter college with a higher level of proficiency than most other students. In addition, our students score well above state and national testing averages on the SAT and ACT tests.
According to state laws, children who have reached the age of six, or who will be six by September 1 of the current school year, are required to attend school regularly during the entire school term.
Kindergarten Enrollment - A child must be five years of age on or before September 1 to enroll in kindergarten. If the child become five years old between September 1 and January 1 of the current year, he or she will be admitted to kindergarten any time during the year provided the child shows readiness according to established criteria. Reciprocity exists if children move to Florida from another state without meeting these requirements if the children have proof that they are already enrolled in kindergarten.
First Grade Enrollment - A child must be six years of age on or before September 1 and have completed an approved kindergarten program. Reciprocity holds true here as well.
