EGLIN AFB
Eglin Military Reservation. the largest in the world, is 464,316 acres (728 square miles) of land and test ranges. Eglin's historic can be traced to James E. Plew, a wealthy man from Chicago, Illinois. In 1922 he settled in Valparaiso and built an inn, a golf course, a bank and a winery. Occasionally, military planes from Maxwell Field, Alabama would land on Plew's golf course so the pilots could enjoy golfing and fishing in the area.
After a suggestion from Lt. Arnold H. Rich, a visiting officer of the U.S. Army Air Corps to create an aviation base and a bombing and gunnery range for Maxwell Field's Tactical School, Mr. Plew built two runways on his land by, July, 1933. Named Valparaiso Airport, this landing strip was offered to the commanding officer of Maxwell Field by the city of Valparaiso.
In 1934 Mr. Plew donated 4,160 acres to the U.S. Government with the stipulation that funds be provided to build a bombing and gunnery range on the property. On June 14, 1935, the dream of the now Captain Rich was fulfilled when the Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base was activated under his command as a sub-post of Maxwell Field.
The name Eglin Field was designated on August 4. 1937, in honor of Col. Frederick S. Eglin. He had been stationed at Maxwell Field and was killed in a plane crash near Anniston, Alabama on January 1, 1937
No longer a satellite of Maxwell Field, Eglin became an important testing center for combat aircraft and equipment during World War II. In 1942, the base was the advanced training facility for Doolittle's famous Tokyo Raiders.
A complete community within itself, Eglin Air Force Base accommodates the living needs of its service personnel. The interaction of the base with the surrounding communities is beneficial to all. The citizens of Okaloosa County realize that much of the prosperity of the area is a direct result of this massive reservation and are proud to have it within their boundaries. In addition to being one the major employers in the area, the Eglin Military Reservation provides thousands of acres to the public for hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing and camping.
